Introduction to Costume and Set Design Short Course

The Introduction to Costume and Set Design Short Course introduces the process of character costume design and its role within a production for film or theatre. Students gain an overview of the role of the set and costume designer within theatre and screen. This is a hands-on, project-based course and students respond to an exciting brief. Students learn how to extract key information from an initial concept and use it to develop costume and set designs that bring the characters and settings to life. An improved portfolio reflects students’ newfound ability to bring characters and their settings to life. The course provides an opportunity for individual research and tutorial discussions. Students answer a brief by producing a range of costume and set designs By the end of the course, students should have: • Created a scale model supported by sketches and illustrations. • Developed a body of work comprising costume and set design. • Gained experience in answering project briefs. • Improved their portfolio. • Experienced life on campus. • Had the chance to network and share ideas with students from across the globe. • Received feedback and critique on assignments. • Developed new skills.
