Costume Making Short Course

The Costume Making Short Course examines mens and ladies 18th century costume, focusing on the bodice, skirt, stomacher, sleeves and collars. Students work on the mannequin and go through the process of dress pattern cutting needed to complete a costume. Starting with mens and ladies 18th century costume, students focus on the 'Robe a la Francais', especially the bodice, skirt, stomacher, sleeves and collars. Students work in Calico fabric to bring a dress to “Toile” stage. Initially making a corset-shape to transform the mannequins into an 18th century silhouette, students are taken through the process of cutting a dress pattern on the stand and gain an understanding of the methods needed to complete the costume. By the end of the course, students should: • Be able to identify costumes from all periods of the 18th century. • Have the confidence to make a pattern from a design. • Have experienced life on campus. • Have had the chance to network and share ideas with students from across the globe. • Have received feedback and critique on assignments. • Have developed new skills.
