Concrete Casting Short Course

Hanneke De Leeuw

The Concrete Casting Short Course explores the aesthetic and conceptual possibilities of concrete through a perceptive and spontaneous process. During the course, students learn to make experimental abstract concrete sculptural objects using a variety of casting techniques, experimenting with form, structure and positive and negative space. The course aims to equip students with the skills needed to develop their own ideas and projects through experimentation, a series of mould making techniques and other possible applications of the material in an art and design context. Students gain an insight into mould making using a variety of materials including wood, metal and plastic. The final part of the course explores sculpting and painting with concrete, addressing the process of making and sculpting a small object. Several topics are covered during the course, including concrete mixing, latex moulding, small armature making, pigment additions, ciment fondu, and sustainability and the impact of concrete on the environment. By the end of the course, students will have learnt how to make a variety of cast objects in concrete. They will also have an understanding of the various material possibilities.
