Sketching the Urban Composition Short Course

The Sketching the Urban Composition Short Course offers students an insight into drawing unique urban landscapes. The course is designed to help students take their sketchbook drawings and turn them into a large-scale urban composition. Drawing from the city for half a day, students take part in mark making and imaginative exercises to encourage their sketches to be instinctive, inventive and informative. Back in class, they look at urban artists work and execute a range of exploratory drawing exercises and from their sketches, compositional plans. During the course, students work on their final composition from sketches and complete separate exercises using secondary sources, collage and imagination. Feeding some of these ideas into the large drawing, students are encouraged to take risks, and work through trial and error. The large drawing will evolve into an original, sustained and personal piece. Topics covered: Sketching on location How to combine these to make a final personal work How to use information from different sources to make a multi-layered composition By the end of the course students will have: • Developed a range of original secondary drawings and studies • Knowledge of inventive drawing techniques • Confidence to re-think their work and use different sources to make a multi-layered drawing on a large scale • Developed new skills • Experienced life on campus • Had the chance to network and share ideas with students from across the globe • Received feedback and critique on assignments
