Introduction to Bioinspired Textile Design Online Short Course

The Introduction to Bioinspired Textile Design Online Short Course guides students through the historical and contemporary developments of bio informed practice. Students learn about the framework and key concepts of bioinspired textiles (BIT) design. The course introduces students to bioinspired textiles and how it relates to the broader bio informed design landscape. During the course, students are guided through eight biological structural design elements and gain an insight into how they can impact the resource efficiency, longevity and recovery of textile practice. Students also review inspirational examples of textile practice (BIT design) to inspire their future design practice.  By the end of the course, students should be able to: • Describe the key concepts of bioinspired textiles • Articulate the difference between biodesign and biomaterials • Outline how biology can help us improve the sustainability of our design practice • Recognise the obstacles and challenges designers face when engaging with biological disciplines
