Furniture Design Beginners Summer School Short Course

The Furniture Design Beginners Summer School Short Course offers a comprehensive overview of current professional furniture design practices. Students gain an insight into some practical aspects of design such as batch production, technical restraint and ergonomics. During the course, students learn conceptual, practical, problem solving and making skills using different materials and processes to develop their own unique furniture. Students learn how to establish a solid foundation for their project, pin down a client brief, develop ideas in 2D and 3D sketch modelmaking and find out about materials, sustainability and production processes. The course covers model making, drawing and sketching, creating mock ups, producing scaled models and experimenting with wood, wire, metal and plastics. Students make use of the workshops at Central Saint Martins to develop their designs and learn how to work in scale.
