Furniture Design for Beginners Short Course

The Furniture Design for Beginners Short Course combines conceptual and practical skills in furniture design and model making. The course is designed to help students develop an understanding of the professional furniture design practice as a whole. During the course, students gain an insight into the practical elements of design such as batch production, costings, technical restraint and ergonomics. Students get a comprehensive overview of the key areas of current professional furniture design practice and have the chance to make use of the resources and workshops at Central Saint Martins. The course covers several topics including model making, drawing and sketching, experimenting with wood, metal and plastics and testing ideas in scale. Students learn how to research and interpret a client’s needs, as well as how to present their final designs in a 3D presentation model. Students are encouraged to tap into their creativity and experiment with different ideas to develop their designs. The course offers a balance between conceptual design processes and practical tools to enable students to transform their ideas into three-dimensional reality.
