Modern Art Theory through Practice Short Course

On the Modern Art Theory through Practice Short Course, students explore contemporary art through a combination of critical theory, practice and visiting galleries. Students get a view of the London art world, visiting some of London's art galleries and museums, as well as alternative art spaces, framed around a set of references that begin to ask questions about what art is and what it is for. Students learn through a mixture of lectures and practical workshops, creating a research journal based on topics explored and in response to exhibition visits. This journal may be added to a portfolio and will demonstrate their understanding of the art world and contemporary art theory. Topics covered: Identity politics Surrealism Conceptualism The performative By the end of the course students will have: • Added to a portfolio of work • Learnt different strategies on how to think about what art can be • Developed new skills • Experienced life on campus • Had the chance to network and share ideas with students from across the globe • Received feedback and critique on assignments
