Design for Sustainability Online Short Course

The Design for Sustainability Online Short Course offers an introduction to the tools and processes required for sustainable design practice, including systems thinking, circularity, stakeholder evaluation, and co-creation. The course explores how sustainability may be integrated into the design process. Students gain an understanding of the practical ideas, concepts, and processes through which designers can create more sustainable outcomes at all levels. During the course, students are introduced to the basic tools of designing for sustainability including systems mapping, design thinking for sustainability and circular economy. Students learn through a combination of discussions, lectures, case studies and practical application of tools through hands-on assignment briefs. The course covers a number of relevant topics including strategies for sustainability, design thinking, people centred design, learning from nature and transition design. By the end of the course, students will: • Have an understanding of the main drivers of sustainability, internationally and cross-sectoral • Know the main strategies for sustainability • Have explored the sustainability potential in their work • Have established fluency in the jargon jungle • Have insight into designing processes for sustainability • Have worked on a live project of their choosing, designing for sustainability
