Introduction to Colour, Material and Finish Design Online Short Course
Matthew Thompson
The Introduction to Colour, Material and Finish Design Online Short Course guides students on how to design confidently with colour, material and finish. Students increase their familiarity with different materials and material processes as they learn how to design for our five senses.
During the course, students learn how to apply the principles of colour, material and finish at an early stage of the design process to support both the functional and emotional attributes of their designs. Students work on a range of practical assignments designed to help put knowledge into practice and receive valuable tutor feedback on their work.
The course covers trend research and forecasting, colour design and theory, perception and tactile aesthetics, consumer research and colour palettes for different materials. Students gain an insight into the principles of design thinking and brand strategy from a CMF (colour, material and finish) perspective.
By the end of the course, students will have developed strong analytical skills and the confidence and knowledge needed to integrate CMF principles into the design process. Students will also have a clearer understanding of how to make colour schemes and source materials that are appealing for consumers.
