Information Design and Data Visualisation Online Short Course

Students on the Infromation Design and Data Visualisation Online Short Course learn the fundamentals of information design and data visualisation and how to apply these skills to their own communication projects, or in managerial or designer job roles. During the course, students learn how to analyse data then create a visual display of this quantitative information, visually communicating their ideas to a chosen target audience. Students are introduced to the skill of storytelling with data as they collect and map information. The course covers several topics including visualisation types, software contexts, layout and composition, visual grammar, principles of perception and interdisciplinary design. By the end of the course, students will be able to: • Use the principles of information design • Assess information data and have the capacity to improve upon it • Make diagrams using an appropriate chart type • Create information design that appeals, is understandable and helps people retain information • Use Adobe Illustrator to create infographic maps • Create data visuals to illustrate the data • Use LATCH theory to create two data visualisations • Analyse data effectively • Use information design to tell a story
