Kitchen and Bathroom Planning and Design Short Course

Caroline Turtle

The Kitchen and Bathroom Planning and Design Short Course guides students through the process of planning and designing a kitchen and bathroom project for a residential interior. Kitchens and bathrooms are the most complex part of any interior space. They both involve regulations, detailed planning, installing services, controlling budgets and additions to the interior. The Kitchen and Bathroom Planning and Design Short Course helps students develop an understanding of all these elements as well as how to make informed design decisions within these spaces. Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations and tutorials, students develop the knowledge and tools needed to communicate their ideas. Students learn how to write a detailed client brief and translate this into a functional and visual space. The course covers a variety of topics including client briefs, site surveys, space planning and ergonomics, 3D axonometric drawing, materials, colour and lighting. By the end of the course, students should be able to translate a client’s brief into a feasible interior design proposal and will have developed the skills needed to tackle their own projects. They will also be able to produce a mood board with detailed floor plans and elevations at a scale of 1:25 for either a kitchen or bathroom.
