How To Become An Independent Curator Short Course

Eve MacNeill
The How To Become An Independent Curator Short Course provides students with an essential tool kit with which to become an independent curator. It has a track record for launching careers and educational paths in this field. The course is designed to help students think critically about the role of the curator and to identify and establish an individual curatorial approach.
Students are guided through the essentials of curating their own exhibition, gallery or on-going art project and the practicalities of organising this.
Working in small groups, students create a proposal and presentation ready to translate into an actual exhibition. By the end of course, students will have an understanding of how to develop and present their own independently curated projects.
Topics covered include:
- Developing an idea or concept
- Finding a venue
- Liaising with artists - including contracts and commission
- Different curatorial approaches
- Apply for funding and sponsorship
- Forming partnerships
- Networking
- Working to budgets
- Successfully marketing and documenting an exhibition
