History of Haute Couture Fashion Short Course

Lily Sebag-Montefiore
Charting the evolution of Haute Couture since the inception of the House of Worth in 1858, the History of Haute Couture Short Course is an introduction into how the art of original design, coupled with the highest of skills, came to dominate fashion through most of the 20th century.
Students explore the role of the designer and the extraordinary craftsmanship behind the finished creations, the importance of haute couture in Parisian culture, and its influence on the wider international fashion industry.
The course also looks at the challenges contemporary designers face in keeping handmade traditional couture relevant in an age dominated by fast changing trends and mass consumerism.
Students get the chance to develop their skills as a researcher, critical thinker and communicator. They will also gain historical knowledge and be inspired by the potential to incorporate the skills of haute couture into their own studies, practice or work.
